Roseburg News:
City
of Winston:
After
a year of grievances over eliminating a bargaining unit job (Kathy
Holcomb, previous Vice President of the Local), longevity pay
issues, warnings and finally,
narrowing the twenty two grievances down to ten to take to
arbitration and then narrowing those ten grievances down to eight,
a settlement agreement was reached that gives Kathy $5,118.75 in
back pay and an increase in pay to include her longevity that the
City had taken away. District
Reps. John Hilkey and Bert Larson worked on these issues, trying
to save the Local and City the monies involved in presenting these
cases to Arbitration, that most likely would have netted the same
amount of money but six months down the road.
John Hilkey said he wished to thank the Committee and City
of Winston Union members for being patient and letting the process
work. This unit has
only been organized since 2002 and this is their first Working
Agreement they are working under.
Kathy is scheduled to attend Specialized Training for Women
July 11-16 and Leadership I August
29 – Sept 3, 2004 at the Machinist Leadership School in
Hollywood, Maryland..
Roseburg
Forest Products:
While
our mill shut down at the end of 2003, and the Local sold the
Union Hall to the long time tenant Roseburg Martial Arts.
We have
still maintained an eye on what the Company is doing.
At last word in the negotiations Roseburg’s offer was
turned down overwhelmingly.
Their offer included no pay increases for four years, $500
bonus each year, must
use vacation before FMLA, 2 hours of mandatory overtime
for forced attendance in safety meetings , pension increase
for future service only, new
hires first year $4 per hour less wages, 2nd year $3.00
per hour less wages, 3rd year $2.00 per hour less wages
and the 4th year $1.00 per hour less.
It would take 5 years to get up to your regular rate of
pay. Day at a time
vacation at the option of the Company and all vacation pay is lump
sum. 1600 hours to
qualify for vacation pay.
Needless to say it was voted down as previously stated.
